Hilariously and horrifyingly, I was speaking with someone last week in NY, whose opinion was 'whats the difference Kerry is no better, the whole electoral thing is a sham anyhow,' which is true but mindbogglingly indifferent to the demonstrable criminality of the regime and the implications regarding the success of a real move for consolidated domination of a specific group in the ruling class. As if 'making a big deal' of this were only to engage in the embarassingly naive and gauche support-the-democratic-party posture. So the idea is because the system is unjust, corrupt and rotten, we give up - those powerful enough to commit crimes ought to be able to ignore the remnants of the institutions of law and governance, and at the same time ought to continue to use those remnants as their tool of class war, while to contest any of this or take it seriously is to be hopelessly unfashionable. A degree of personal and political surrender to despotism - concealing a little obvious admiration for the victors here and their lawlessness and will to power, a determination to get in their camp before the gates are closed - one hadn't perhaps quite noticed in its real scale, below the surface for a while, now in the spotlight.
ReplyDeleteIts an echo also of the reaction to Jesse Helms' revelations in the 80s that his murderous fascist friend d'Aubuisson had been done electoral wrongs by the CIA in el salvador, who fixed the election for Duarte. It was then, so, he's a fascist! Good for the CIA for installing the 'moderate'! the American ideological machine is terrifically efficient in this particular kind of translation of everything into this genre of simple fable, kind of friendly american cartoon pragmatist machiavellianism where the happy end - it could always have been worse! - purifies the mechanisms of murderous, larcenous power.
ReplyDeleteNonetheless all this is accompanied by press-induced overexcitement about the legal travails of a trio of Republican politicians.
at the very least this shows how broad the collaboration is - to rig elections across many states requires a conspiracy of more than some five or six fiendish masterminds - the whole bureaucracy, middle managers of these participating corporations, has to be ready to commit crimes, feel comfortable committing them, assured of the silence of all the passive witnesses to the crimes and the collaboration and agility of the media in spinning the story should one decide to blow a whistle. A few monts ago, Three Days Of The Condor was on tv: that last line "will they print it?" has so so different a ring now than it did ten years ago.
